This SEL teaching and discussion moment centers around the Inspired Minds affirmation: I am a beautiful human being. These discussion questions provide opportunities to apply the affirmation to each of the five core competencies of social and emotional learning.

Self-awareness

Let’s say the affirmation together. I am a beautiful human being.

What do you think it means to be beautiful?

Name some ways that every human being is beautiful?

Self-management

What positive self-talk can you use when you don’t feel as if you’re a beautiful person?

Responsible decision-making

We don’t always make the right decisions because we all make mistakes. What is a positive way we can deal with the emotions we have when we make a mistake?

All human beings are beautiful. Let’s name some actions that show we value another person.

Social awareness

A person who is beautiful inside and out has a good heart, is kind, is willing to help a friend, is a good listener, gives encouragement, and is a pleasant person to be around. Who do you know who is like that? (Name a friend, family member, neighbor, or teacher who isn’t in this room.)

Relationship skills

Imagine that you see someone in class who is sad or discouraged. What would a beautiful person do to encourage that classmate?

Next week’s SEL focus: I love to learn.
