These questions are designed to spark conversation with students to expand growth mindset and social emotional learning. This week’s topic is about attitudes about learning. The discussion provides opportunities to apply the affirmation to each of the five core competencies of social and emotional learning.

Affirmation: I LOVE TO LEARN

Self-awareness

Let’s say the affirmation together. I love to learn.

What difficulty do you have with the idea of learning something new?

What is your favorite subject to learn more about? (Not necessarily a school subject.)

How do you feel after you have learned something that challenged you?

Self-management

When you need to learn something that isn’t your favorite subject, how could you motivate yourself to pay attention and work hard?

Responsible decision-making

Describe a situation where you problem-solved and learned something new.

When you feel like quitting, what can you do that will help you to be successful at learning?

Social awareness

Your friends might like to learn about different things than you do. How could you cooperate to make learning more fun for everyone?

Relationship skills

Sometimes it’s hard to listen when learning something new. Why is listening an important part of learning?

How can you help someone else who didn’t understand the instructions?

Next week’s SEL focus: I strive to improve myself.
