This SEL teaching and discussion moment centers around the Inspired Minds affirmation: I am capable. These discussion questions provide opportunities to apply the affirmation to each of the five core competencies of social and emotional learning.

Self-awareness

Let’s say the affirmation together. I am capable.

What does it mean to be capable? (Define the word)

On a scale of 1–10, with 10 being the most, how self-confident are you when you read that statement?

Self-management

When you’re stressed about something you think you are not capable of, what is a positive way to react?

Responsible decision-making

Give an example of how you were capable of something that you didn’t think you could do at first.

How does the experience you described affect your decisions now when you aren’t sure you’re capable?

Social awareness

Describe how people who are capable of different things can make a great team.

Relationship skills

How could a person who is capable help others in a way that encourages them to be their best?

Next week’s SEL focus: I am talented and gifted.

Suggestion for virtual learning:

  • Purchase a pack of 30 postcards for the teacher to hold the appropriate one up to the screen during discussion.
  • Purchase a pack of 30 small hand-off notes for each student to have at home with them. This allows for an interactive and hands-on experience.
